What is CANstruction®? CANstruction is a charity event using the creative spirit of a design competition to aid in the fight against hunger. Teams led by construction industry professionals design and build sculptures with cans of food. Jurors review these designs and select winners for awards like: Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, Most Cans, and Best Original Design. Traditionally, the sculptures are displayed for 1-2 weeks while votes are cast by the public for a People’s Choice Award where a donation of one dollar equals one vote towards their favorite can structure. Afterwards, all cans are donated to Utah Food Bank. The Society of Design Administrators began the CANstruction competitions in 1992. Since then this event has collected over 10 million pounds of food, and Salt Lake City is just one of over 100 participating cities. The official CANstruction web site is www.CANstruction.org. Check out National winners from the past five years and get inspired! Here’s the truth about hunger in Utah:
For 120 years, Utah Food Bank has been feeding Utah families by working to gather food and support from communities across the state. For 45 years, Utahns Against Hunger has worked ever day to shape public policy by educating and collaborating with federal and state policymakers, and to make nutrition programs work for the Utahns who need them. Now the design industry professionals CAN DO something to help alleviate hunger! Partner with AIA Utah and Canstruction Salt Lake City to meet this urgent need in our community while showcasing the talent and community engagement found in our local a/e/c professions.
We CAN do something about it!

Goal & Donations Traditionally, CANstruction generates canned food donations and will continue to accept this type of donation. However, due to the increasing number of Utahns who are in need of help, Utah Food Bank also needs monetary donations. In the hands of Utah Food Bank, a $1 donation turns into $8.36 in goods and services for Utahns facing hunger. Money donated through the People’s Choice award will be shared evenly between UFB and UAH. 2025 Goals:
Teams Commitment CANstruction will be hosted in downtown SLC in various locations where teams will have 8 hours to build their sculptures. Each team must be willing to commit the time and effort required to design the sculpture and practice their construction techniques in a safe manner. Each team is also committing to providing enough volunteers for De-Canstruction which includes getting cans to the tubs provided by UFB. In response to UFB’s urgent need for donations we ask that teams commit to a sculpture of a minimum of 1,000 cans. Build-day procedures will be finalized the month before the event and sent out to teams. Teams should anticipate no more than 5 builders allowed at any one time in the build space due to space limitations. 2025 Schedule
Registration & Cost Entry Fee: $175
