Utah has been fortunate to have rail transit service since 1999 when the first TRAX route opened, connecting Salt Lake City and Sandy with light rail. Since then, the overall system has expanded and now includes additional TRAX routes, FrontRunner commuter rail, S-Line streetcar, and Bus Rapid Transit services across Salt Lake, Utah, Davis and Weber Counties.

While service has expanded, transit supportive land use within the areas directly around many transit stations has seen very little change. Transit station areas are strategic locations to promote development and redevelopment, especially in meeting our regional housing needs. The intent of recent state legislation to create Transit Station Area (TSA) Plans is to merge transit with land uses providing walkable, bikable and transit supportive access to employment, education, daily needs retail, entertainment, recreation and other amenities — and in doing so create more vibrant neighborhoods, increase transit use, and improve quality of life in new urban neighborhoods across the region.

CNU Utah, APA Utah, ASLA Utah, and Urban Design Utah are inviting you to attend an event which will explore the Transit Station Area planning process and what is being done to fulfill the potential of station areas. We will look at how this process occurs in Utah going from state to region to city to station area. We have a knowledgeable panel that will address the power and opportunities that can come when the Transit Station Area process is executed well. The location of the event will also help in demonstrating successes experienced in the 900 South Station Area in Salt Lake City, and we invite participants to explore this area before and after the event. There are numerous food options nearby, so you can also meetup with other professional colleagues to grab some dinner after the event if you wish.
